Fixed Mindset Versus Growth Mindset
This is presently a great scope of debate. First of all, what is a mindset? Mindset is a belief about yourself and your basic qualities. Carol Dweck was the one who found the theory behind two different types of mindsets. There is basically two types of mindset: growth mindset and fixed mindset. What is fixed mindset? It is a state of mind where people believe that all their physical and mental traits are fixed and cannot be changed.
What is growth mindset? It is a state of mind that is totally opposite to a fixed mindset. People with the growth mindset believe that their qualities can be changed with continuous hard work and determination. Studies prove that people with a growth mindset are more likely to be successful than people with a fixed mindset. Now, researchers are brainstorming about the advantages of growth mindset over fixed mindset. People with growth mindset get easily adjusted and are more patient , this makes them flexible mentally. They are ready to face challenges more often and enjoy failures as their next step to success. They accept criticism and work on them to make it better. They are always ready to take risks. Whereas the drawback that people with a fixed mindset face are that they don't try on new things that easily and are never ready to take risks. They have " fear of failures" and are never ready to face challenges. This is how they themselves hinder their success. Carol Dweck once said "Why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better? Why hide deficiencies instead of overcoming them? Why look for friends or partners who will just shore up your self-esteem instead of ones who will also challenge you to grow? And why seek out the tried and true, instead of experiences that will stretch you? The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset. A growth mindset is a mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives."
But this is not permanent. People with a fixed mindset can change their mindset by believing that they can change. Remember that it is a continuous and never-ending process and needs to be continuously improved.
Do you have a fixed or growth mindset?
